Galashiels Club Championships 2025: Top Talent Shines on Finals Night

The 2025 Annual Club Championships came to an exciting close last week at Galashiels Squash Club, with a fantastic evening of high-quality squash and well-deserved recognition across the board.

This prestigious tournament attracts the best players from across the Borders, and the finals did not disappoint—featuring fierce battles, club legends, and new names making their mark.

🏆 Men’s Final: Tony Elliot Makes History

The Men’s Final saw the top two seeds clash as Tony Elliot (Hawick) faced off against Colin Woodward (Kelso).

Tony took control early, racing through the first game 15–7. Colin responded well, adjusting his game to take the second 15–11 and level the match. With tension high, both players traded rallies, but Tony’s trademark full-length drives proved decisive. He claimed the next two games 15–12, 15–12 to seal a 3–1 victory.

“This was a tough final, but I’m glad to keep the run going,” said Tony.

With this win, Tony secures his eighth consecutive Club Championship title, equalling the legendary Iain Hogg, who dominated the 1990s with eight wins in ten years.

Club Captain Del Sharratt praised the achievement:

“It’s an incredible run—eight titles in a row. Tony has seen off so many challengers over the years. His commitment is second to none. He’s in the club four to five times a week, gets regular coaching, and even trains with Scotland’s current No. 2, Rory Stewart. He sets a brilliant example for all our players.”

👏 Ladies’ Final: Back-to-Back Titles for Lucy Johnson

In the Ladies’ Final, Lucy Johnson (Gala) successfully defended her 2024 title with a commanding 3–0 win over Lynn Palepoi (Tweedbank).

Lynn, a former champion herself, brought plenty of experience to the court, but Lucy’s strength and composure shone through.

“Lucy’s only been at the club for two years and has won the title both times,” said Del. “She’s the strongest female player we’ve had in many years and is now pushing for a place in our East League Team.”

🛡 Alex Doherty Memorial Shield: Youth vs Experience

The Alex Doherty Memorial Shield, played by early-round Championship exits, featured an exciting final between Dan Boshoff (Hawick) and club legend Iain Laing.

Despite Laing’s decorated career and two previous club titles, it was Boshoff—almost 40 years his junior—who took the upper hand. Dan’s speed and energy earned him a convincing 3–0 win (15–8, 15–7, 15–9).

The Shield remains the only club trophy Laing has yet to win—one for next year, perhaps?

🏅 Stewart Finnie Trophy: Most Improved Player

A special moment on the night saw Alison Finnie present the Stewart Finnie Trophy for Most Improved Player to Scott Hall (Ashkirk).

“Scott has shot up the club’s box leagues,” said Del. “He’s always first to training and the last to leave. Reaching Box 1 is no easy feat—and it’s a credit to his work ethic and drive.”
