The Galashiels Squash Club Championship pits the Best Squash Players form all over the Borders against one another. Tony had seen off Brian Magowan of Melrose and Selkirks Iain Laing 3-0 in the early rounds before being tested by Peebles Richard Hebb in the Semi- Final 15-11, 15-11, 15-7.
Sam Collin had defeated Richard Taylor of Gala 3-0, then Jedburgh’s Alan Jobes 3-1 before being pushed to the wire by Kelso’s Jordan Reid in the Semi-Final 3-2.
The Final was an absolutely Cracking match, Tony was hot favourite to win a 7th title, but Tony knew Sam would be no push over. Sam Collin played some flawless squash in the first game and was in control of the rallies throughout, Sam took the first 15-11 and started well in the second, but Tony Elliot was relentless and would go for everything and Tony played the percentage shots but was just so good that Collin’s focus went and Collin couldn’t maintain his early form. Elliot brought the match back with 15-9, 15-5 for a 2-1 lead.
Collin didn’t lack fight and determination and made some tight accurate drives and the fourth was another classic game. Elliot wouldn’t give up and held out to take it 15-10 and 3-1 for his SEVENTH Title.
Tony Elliot Said of the match “It gets more and more difficult every year, great effort by Collin”.
Next year Tony is looking to Equal Iain Hogg’s record Haul of eight Galashiels Squash Club Championship titles and have Legend Status at the club.
