Among the notable contenders was Galashiels Squash Club Coach and Scotland International, John Meehan, who entered the tournament as one of the favorites for the title. Alongside him were fellow Gala Squash Club Members Sam Collin, Del Sharratt, and Jerry Cooke, all geared up to make their mark in the competition.
However, the event didn’t unfold as expected for Meehan, who faced a tough challenge in the semi-finals against Nottingham University Prodigy, Paul Broadberry. In a closely contested match, Meehan succumbed to Broadberry’s skillful play, losing 11-9, 11-9, 4-11, 5-11, 10-12. Broadberry, in turn, faced fierce competition in the final, where he was defeated by USA’s Sam Osborne-Wylde in a gripping showdown.
In the Graded Tournaments, Sam Collin emerged victorious in the Grade A event, showcasing an impressive display of skill and determination. Despite starting as the Fourth seed, Collin dominated his group with three consecutive victories, including a remarkable performance against compatriot Del Sharratt. Collin’s journey culminated in a compelling final showdown against Robert Koenig of Grange Squash Club, where he clinched the title with a 3-1 victory, demonstrating precision and composure on the court.
Reflecting on his triumph, Collin expressed his satisfaction, acknowledging the challenging competition and the excitement it brought to the event. In the Grade B Tournament, newcomer Jerry Cooke from Lauder made a memorable debut, claiming notable victories over formidable opponents to secure a spot in the final.
Despite an impressive run, Cooke faced a formidable challenge in the final against Finlay Duncan of Edin Univ Squash Club, whose diverse range of shots and strategic play proved too much to handle. In a closely contested match, Duncan emerged victorious with a 3-1 win, showcasing his potential and adding an element of surprise to the tournament.
