The Galashiels Squash Club 2023 Club Championships came to a close last week with some awesome matches. The Gents championship took in Entrants from all over the Borders, and a very strong tournament took place this year – and the final was contested between Hawick’s Tony Elliot and Peebles Sam Collin.
Tony was looking for a sixth title in a Row; whereas this was Sam’s first year in the Club Championships – having previously been affiliated to The Grange in Edinburgh and he was hoping to end Tony’s run. Sam came through a tough Semi-Final against Kelso’s Jordan Reid 3-2 having being 2-1 down!
This was a highly anticipated match-up and the crowd er kept in awe throughout. The Quality of squash was awesome and several times Both players produced shots that seemed impossible, but these highly skilled Athletes demonstrate why the are the Top players at the club.
Tony had won through to the final by disposing of Pat Walsh (Hawick), Richard Hebb (Peebles) and in the Semi final – Alan Jobes (Hownam) all with 3-0 victories. In the Final Tony also Triumphed 3-0 (15-6, 15-13, 15-12) and his legacy at Galashiels Squash Club continues. This is title number 6 for Tony Elliot and each year different players from around the Borders haven’t been able to stop Tony romping to the title.
Tony Elliots 6-in a row is a record at the Squash Club and he is getting ever closer to Club Legend Iain Hogg’s 8 Titles in total.
A sweat covered Tony said after the match “This gets harder and harder every year”.
