CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP SHIELD TOURNAMENT 2021
Del Sharratt 3-2 Amir Hosny (16-14, 15-13, 12-15, 11-15, 17-15).
An awesome match that lasted the best part of an hour saw Club Captain Del Sharratt take the Scalp of Amir Hosny. Amir is a student who splits his time between studying and the courts and has won this trophy in 2017.
Del surprised himself by going 2-0 up, but Del was totally focused on every shot and was determined to keep up with the younger Amir. The Scores pretty much summed up the first two games (16-14 and 15-13) as there wasn’t much to separate the players. Amir got into his stride in the third and although the games were similar, Amir triumphed 15-12, 15-11. Sharratt was under the cosh and although he was tiring quicker than the younger and fitter Hosny, he was determined to win. At 13-13 Del served out and thought he had blown his chance for victory, but with one last huge effort, Del saved 3 match points and a deft forehand drop which sent Amir the wrong way took the match and title for Sharratt.
Del Sharratt said “The Alex Doherty memorial shield is a prestigious trophy to win. The late Alex Doherty single-handedly kept the Squash Club going during the barren years and the club wouldn’t exist today if it wasn’t for Alex Doherty. This trophy holds great standing in the club and I just wanted it more. Amir has played at top seed in the Border Reivers team and is regarded as one of the top players at the club so I am thrilled with the victory. It’s probably the hardest I’ve had to work for a victory but I was determined and just wasn’t going to stop running!”
